Vandiya Devan thinking
“How grand is this Chozla land! My journey has only begun, yet my heart already leaps with the promise of adventure!”
Guard
“Halt! None shall pass! The Lords of Pazluvoor hold private counsel within!”
Vandiya Devan
“Out of my way! A warrior of the Vaanar clan does not wait outside closed doors!”
Lord Pazluvoor
“The bedridden Emperor is weak. The throne belongs to you, Prince Madurandaka!”
Prince Madurandaka
“If the great chieftains swear their swords to my cause, I shall claim my birthright!”
Alvar-adiyan Nambi
“If you seek to know what the stars hold for your journey to Tanjore, visit the Astrologer of Kudanthai. He reads the secrets of kings!”
Vandiya Devan
“I beg pardon… I did not know such celestial beauty resided in this house.”
Princess Kundavai thinking
“Who is this bold, charismatic traveler from the North?”
Princess Kundavai smiling
“We are deeply grateful for your unparalleled bravery, Sir! Our fierce monster has been utterly defeated.”
Vandiya Devan
“Your brother, Nambi, sends his deepest regards, My Queen.”
Nandini Devi
“Take this ring. It will open any gate in Tanjore… but you must return to me with Kundavai’s reply.”
Nandini Devi
“Serve me as my confidential retainer, and you shall have a reward for which kings have begged for years.”
Vandiya Devan thinking
“Dear heart, stay courageous… do not let this sorceress rob you of your mind!”
Ravidasa hissing
“Have you forgotten the cremation grounds of Vaigai? You are no Chozla Queen—you are our weapon of vengeance!”
Nandini Devi whispering
“Those memories are burned with fire upon my heart. I have not forgotten.”
Vandiya Devan gasping
“Oh God! A skeleton amidst the Chozla gold… Is this the silent fate that awaits all who trespass in this vault of secrets?”
Vandiya Devan
“Coward! You dare strike my friend from behind?!”
Traitorous Guard gasping
“He knows too much… the Lords of Pazluvoor order his end!”
Vandiya Devan shivering
“Hold on, Kandamara! I will not let you drown in these cold Chozla waters!”
Vandiya Devan dancing
“Fools! Let the sentries search the roads… Kamsa shall dance his way directly to the Princess!”
Princess Kundavai eyes softening
“My brother writes that I can trust you with my very life. Vandiya Deva, the Goddess of Victory has sent you to me in our darkest hour.”
Aditya Karikala
“I chopped down her king, her father, right before her eyes! The look of absolute hatred in her eyes that night has burned itself into my very soul forever!”
Scene I
Under the golden rays of the late afternoon sun, Vandiya Devan rides along the endless embankments of the majestic Veera Narayana Lake. As the new spring floods rush through the seventy-four massive floodgates, the festive crowds sing of the ancient Chozla kings who turned wild waters into a bountiful empire.
Scene II
At the towering stone ramparts of Kadamboor Fort, spear-wielding gatekeepers bar the traveler’s path. With a flash of steel and a roar of defiance, Vandiya Devan spurs his steed and breaches the gate, charging directly into the arms of his laughing brother-in-arms, Kandamaran.
Scene III
Shrouded in the deep midnight shadows of a terrace pillar, Vandiya Devan peers down into the courtyard. Below, the most powerful chieftains of the empire gather around a closed palanquin. As the drapes part, the pious Prince Madurandaka steps into the torchlight, secretly agreeing to usurp the throne from the Crown Prince.
Scene IV
Crossing the roaring, silt-red waters of the Kollidam River, Vandiya Devan detours toward Kudanthai. Guided by the mysterious whispers of a wandering Vaishnava spy, he seeks out the city’s famed astrologer, unaware that his destiny is about to collide with royalty.
Scene V
Vandiya Devan bursts headlong into the quiet parlor of the Kudanthai Astrologer. In a single, breathless moment, the world stands still as he locks eyes with Princess Kundavai. Fascinated by the mysterious Princess, Vandiya Devan eagerly followed the path of her departing chariot, leading him straight to the shadowed, serene banks of the Arisil River.
Scene VI
Sighting a monstrous crocodile ready to strike the Princess’s maidens along the riverbank, Vandiya Devan hurls his spear with flawless precision. But as his weapon pierces the beast, the maidens burst into joyous, ringing laughter—exposing the terrifying predator as a harmless, straw-stuffed toy.
Scene VII
Riding toward the heavily fortified city of Tanjore with Prince Aditya’s secret letters in his satchel, Vandiya Devan encounters the closed palanquin of Nandini Devi on the dusty highway. Cleverly dropping the name of her brother, he coaxes the beautiful Nandini to part her silken screens, obtaining her personal signet ring to bypass the fortress guards.
Scene VIII
Having successfully delivered Prince Aditya’s secret letter to the bedridden Emperor, Vandiya Devan’s duty was half-done. Drawn deeper into the palace’s web of intrigue, he slips into a fragrant garden gazebo under the cover of night. There, reclining on a swinging couch, the hypnotic eyes of Nandini pierce his soul, offering a reward beyond his wildest dreams in exchange for his loyalty.
Scene IX
The shadows of the garden warp as the sorcerer Ravidasa emerges. In a chilling flashback, the comfort of her silk sari dissolves into a memory of a Vaigai River cremation ground—where a young, bound Nandini swore a terrible oath beside the burning pyres to destroy the Chozla tiger flag.
Scene X
Fleeing the gazebo to avoid the sudden return of the Elder Lord Pazluvoor, Vandiya Devan plunges into the dark mansion’s forbidden underground vaults. Trickling priceless pearls through his fingers in the dim torchlight, his heart freezes in absolute horror as his hand brushes against a cold human skeleton.
Scene XI
Following a faint light through the twisting tunnels, Vandiya Devan witnesses a dreadful betrayal. A traitorous guard draws a curved dagger and plunges it into the back of his dearest friend, Kandamaran, to silence what he knows. With a roar of fury, Vandiya Devan leaps from the darkness to strike down the assassin.
Scene XII
Carrying his fainted, bleeding friend upon his shoulders, Vandiya Devan battles the shivering winds and raging torrents of the Vadavaru River. Wobbling unsteadily across a wet, toppled tree trunk, he braves the swirling whirlpools to deliver Kandamaran to the safety of Sendan Amudan’s suburban gardens, before setting off toward the historic capital of Pazlayarai.
Scene XIII
Hunted across the Chozla country as a wanted spy, Vandiya Devan employs a brilliant, festive ruse. Joining a troupe of street-play actors celebrating Krishna’s birthday, he steals a grotesque, large-mustached wooden mask of the Demon King Kamsa, dancing his way past the unsuspecting city sentries completely unnoticed.
Scene XIV
By the quiet, lotus-filled waters of the Pazlayarai wharf, Vandiya Devan climbs the steps to Princess Kundavai. As she reads her brother Aditya’s secret palm-leaf letter, her frown dissolves, and she realizes that this brave, wind-swept messenger before her is the highly capable, trusted champion sent by destiny to aid her plans.
Scene XV
On the windy, moonlit terraces of Mamallai, Prince Aditya Karikala confesses the dark, festering nightmare of his past. He remembers the cottage door kicked open, and the swift stroke of his sword beheading the Pandiya King Veera-pandiya, while a weeping, disheveled Nandini fell at his feet, begging in vain for her father’s life.
Thus flows the Ponni
Fifteen scenes, one river, and an empire balanced on the edge of a blade. The ferry across the roaring Kollidam, the ring handed down from a curtained palanquin, the oath sworn beside the pyres of the Vaigai, and the dance of the Demon King Kamsa now flow toward the sea — where the tale sails onward, and the Son of Ponni himself awaits.
